Personalised Diwali Gifts: Name Signs and Photo Lithophanes
By the third week of the festive season, the gifting starts to blur. Everyone has received a dry fruit box. Everyone has received a sweet box. Somebody has definitely re-gifted something and been caught doing it. And every year, one or two gifts stand out from the pile – and it is almost never the most expensive one.
It is the one with somebody’s name on it, or a photograph in it. That is what personalised Diwali gifts get right. In this guide we will explain the two pieces people ask for most – custom name signs and photo lithophanes – how each one is made, what photo works best, and how much time to allow before Diwali on 8 November.
What a Lithophane Actually Is
Most people have never heard the word, so let us explain it properly. A lithophane is a panel printed at carefully varying thickness. Where the picture should be dark, the material is thicker and blocks more light. Where it should be bright, it is thinner and lets more through.
Sitting on a shelf in normal light, it looks like a plain white panel with a faint texture. Put a light behind it, or hold it up to a window, and a photograph appears in full detail. The reaction when someone sees it for the first time is genuinely worth watching.
Why it works so well as a Diwali gift
- Diwali is about lamps and light, so a gift that only reveals itself in light fits the festival perfectly.
- It is completely impossible to buy at a shop, which is the whole point.
- It works for parents, in-laws, grandparents – anyone who values photographs.
- Nobody re-gifts a photograph of their own family.
Choosing the Right Photo
The photo decides everything here, so it is worth two minutes of thought. Lithophanes work through contrast, not colour, and the finished piece is monochrome.
Photos that work beautifully
- One or two faces, reasonably close up, with the subject clearly separated from the background.
- Good, even lighting on the face – daylight photos usually beat indoor flash.
- A clean or simple background rather than a busy one.
- Wedding portraits, a child’s photo, grandparents, a beloved pet.
Photos that struggle
- Large group photos – by the time twelve faces are fitted in, each one is tiny.
- Very dark photographs, or ones where the subject blends into the background.
- Heavily filtered or low-resolution images pulled off social media.
- Screenshots, which have usually lost most of their detail already.
If you are unsure between two photos, pick the one with the clearer face and the simpler background. It will win every time.
Custom Name Signs
The other piece people ask for constantly is a custom name sign. These work in two quite different ways as a Diwali gift.
For the home entrance
A family name at the door is the gift that keeps working every single day of the year. It is particularly good for someone who has just moved into a new home – a housewarming and a Diwali gift in one, which is a common combination given how many families shift around the festival.
For a desk
A desk name sign is a lovely gift for someone who has just started a new job or been promoted. It marks the occasion in a way a generic gift simply cannot, and it sits in front of them all day.

How Much Time to Allow

- Order personalised gifts by around 25 October to be comfortably ahead of Dhanteras on 6 November.
- Ordering several for different family members? Add a few more days and place them together.
- Bulk or corporate personalisation needs about two weeks – see the bulk gifting page.
Delivery is pan-India with free shipping above ₹199 and Cash on Delivery available. You can follow your parcel on the tracking page.
Your Questions, Answered
Does a lithophane need a special lamp?
Not at all. A window, a table lamp, or a phone torch behind it all work. Many people simply stand it where the evening light falls.
Can I send the photo on WhatsApp instead of uploading?
Please upload the original file when you order rather than sending a WhatsApp copy. WhatsApp compresses images heavily, and that lost detail shows up in the finished panel.
How many characters fit on a name sign?
A first name or a family name is ideal. Two names joined by an ampersand also work well. Very long phrases mean smaller letters, so keep it short for the best result.
Can I get a lithophane of a person who has passed away?
Yes, and it is one of the more meaningful things we print. An older photograph works fine as long as it is reasonably sharp – send the best scan you have.
Is personalisation more expensive?
Slightly, because each piece is made individually rather than in a batch, but far less than people expect. There is no minimum quantity either.
One Gift Worth Getting Right
You do not need to personalise thirty gifts. Pick the two or three people who genuinely deserve something considered, and give them something with their own name or their own photograph in it.
